Custom Fabrication: Edgewater 5k Medallions

The Edgewater Chamber of Commerce and 48th Ward Ald. Harry Osterman recently held the first annual Edgewater 5k. We were proud to donate laser cut wooden award medallions for the race winners!

This was a fun project for a great cause. We look forward to partnering with other race producers in the future.

How We Did It: Laser Etching Glass Jars

When we bought our laser cutter, we were excited by the idea of creating decorations and gifts for special events and celebrations. Recently, we got our first wedding order: etching over 50 glass jars for a wedding reception!

This project was a great learning opportunity for us, and our clients were pleased with the results.

One of the biggest hurdles completing the order was that our laser cuts straight down, and the cutting surface was round. To avoid distortion, we needed to rotate the jars incrementally throughout the etching process.

We broke the text into sections with a width that the laser could etch clearly. In the example pictured, the red rectangles are for registering the height and alignment of each etched section.

Taking the measurements from the start of each registration point, we were able to create a ruler that let us know the rotation required in between each etch. Then a small jig was laser cut to cradle and rotate the jars.

Three hundred passes with the laser cutter later, and all the jars were done!

Edgewater Chamber of Commerce Laser Cut Stencils

The Edgewater Chamber of Commerce is getting ready for their big annual street festival, EdgeFest. They were looking for ways to highlight local vendors at the festival, and asked us to create a large stencil they could use to make a spray chalk logo in front of Edgewater businesses' tents on the street. They also asked for a smaller stencil to use for other branding purposes.

The Chamber sent us a vector file of their logo, we made a few quick changes to make it stencil-friendly, and sent to the laser cutter!

Here's a photo of their first test spray in front of the Chamber's office. We can't wait to see it in action at EdgeFest next weekend!

The Great Chicago Chalk Art Festival Awards

We were proud to contribute to a fundraiser for our neighbors at Swift Elementary School yesterday. The Great Chicago Chalk Art Festival took place around the corner from our shop on Broadway, and was an effort to brighten up a drab sidewalk, bring neighbors together, and raise money and awareness for the Friends of Swift fundraising arm of Swift School.

We designed and fabricated 6 award placards for the event using our laser cutter. The design was based on the logo provided by the event producers.

It looks like everyone had a great time at the chalk festival!
